Rogers House Resident, Ron, Takes a Trip Down Memory Lane

Ron Bull, a resident at Rogers House Residential Care Home, enjoyed a nostalgic outing recently, when staff took him for a day out to his former hometown.

Accompanied by the Wigmore care home’s activity team, Ron boarded the bus and made the short journey to Luton, near Chatham, where he had lived for many years before moving into Rogers House back in 2021.

Moving into Rogers House was a big change for Ron and although he was able to bring his cat with him, he still struggled with feeling homesick and missing the things he used to do. So, in a bid to cheer him up, Debbie and Hannah, the activity coordinators at the home, decided to surprise him with a trip to his much-loved town.

Ron used to love cycling around Chatham and as the bus headed towards Luton Arches, his face lit up as he recalled not just his memories of being on is bike but all the local points of interest too, which he told Debbie and Hannah all about.

Ron was able to spend some time wandering around the area and even popped into the shops to get some cat treats, which he hasn’t been able to do independently for a while. Upon leaving the shopping centre, the views across to the Dockyard prompted some memories for Ron, as he recalled his days working as an engineer.

Hannah said: “It was amazing to see how animated Ron was, as soon as he realised where we were, he really came out of his shell and told us all about his time spent living there and what is in the area.

“When we got back to Rogers House, he was telling all the other residents about the outing and what we’d got up to. He can’t wait to go again. It may seem like a small thing to us but it really meant so much to him.”
