Barnes Lodge Couple Celebrating 63 Years of Marriage Share Their Story for Valentine’s Day

Barry and Barbara Smith, who are currently living at Barnes Lodge Care Home in Tonbridge, shared their story of how they met and what they think is the secret to a long and happy marriage.

Barry and Barbara enjoyed a special Valentine’s Day lunch at the Tudeley Lane care home, when staff reserved and decorated a special table by the window for them and invited them to tell their story.

The pair met in the early days of their careers, when they both worked in different departments at Sevenoaks Council. Their first date was a trip to the cinema and the rest is history, as they have now been married for a huge 63 years today.

They married at a church in Larkfield and spent their honeymoon in the beautiful Isle of Wight. They lived in Larkfield for many years and went on to have two children and five grandchildren. Upon their retirement, they moved to Tonbridge.

So what is the secret to a long and happy marriage? In an honest and slightly humorous response, the pair agrees it is, “to give each other space.”
