Retro Recipes Make a Comeback at Tonbridge Care Home

Teacakes were on the menu at Barnes Lodge Care Home in Tonbridge this week, as resident, Gloria, showed her fellow residents how to make an old favourite of hers.

Using her old tried and tested recipe, Gloria, a resident of the Tudeley Lane care home, asked staff if they could make her favourite teacakes in their baking activity.

The residents got together to give it a go, following Gloria’s recipe and chatting about their own memories of baking. Once they were cooked, they tucked into their fresh bakes with a cup of tea, impressed with how delicious they were.

Nicky Pett, General Manager of Barnes Lodge said: “Choice is really important to everyday life here at Barnes Lodge and we encourage residents to be open with suggestions for activities and things they’d like to do.

“Gloria’s recipe was a real hit with the residents, she could clearly recall the recipe and how to make it. The activity prompted a lot of discussion amongst the residents about what they used to bake for their families and their favourite things to cook, it was a great nostalgic activity with lots of reminiscence, which is great for the residents!”

Baking is a great activity for older people, particularly those living with dementia as it is not only therapeutic, it stimulates the senses, triggers memories and maintains a sense of independence. It is also for encouraging socialising.
