Care Home Residents in Sticky Situation With Jam Tarts

With the evenings drawing in, residents of Edward Moore House Residential Care Home made a comforting classic in their baking activity this week.

A classic pastry treat was on the menu at the Trinity Road care home in Gravesend this week, as the group of keen amateur bakers gathered in the dining room, ready for a morning of baking.

Residents spent a morning prepping their pastry and filling with various flavours of jam, in their bid to recreate the retro favourite, jam tarts. Once out of the oven, they enjoyed sampling their nostalgic creations, alongside a well-deserved cup of tea.

Melanie Martin, Deputy Manager at Edward Moore House commented: “The humble jam tart is a real favourite amongst our residents and something many of them have enjoyed throughout their lives, becoming a firm family favourite since it was created in the 1920s. The residents had great fun making their tarts and of course, tasting them too!”

Baking is proven to be incredibly therapeutic for older people, particularly those living with dementia. It is an excellent social activity, as the residents interact with one another and it is great for their reminiscence, as it prompts memories from a bygone era for discussion. It has a relaxing effect too and reduces stress and anxiety.
