Brooke's Big Bake Off at Barnes Lodge

When Barnes Lodge resident Bob turned 89, his great granddaughter had a rather wonderful idea. To raise money for Alzeimer’s Society by baking 89 cupcakes in honour of his 89th birthday.

Barnes Lodge Care Home in Tudeley Lane, Tonbridge, had a delicious delivery of 89 cupcakes, all baked and decorated by 12 year old Brooke, great granddaughter of Bob, who sadly couldn’t celebrate his birthday surrounded by loved ones due to the current pandemic. His family were, however, able to see Bob from a distance and have a lovely chat, explaining why the home was surrounded by cakes!

Brooke approached her mum with the idea having seen an advert on the television by Alzheimer’s Society to join in with a baking fundraiser. Whilst being inspired by her great grandad’s 89th birthday, she came up with the idea of 89 cupcakes to donate to Barnes Lodge, who of course were thrilled by the idea. Bob suffers from vascular dementia, so this is a cause very close to the whole family’s heart, in particular Bob’s daughter Janice.

Janice said: “We would normally be raising money through our work but Covid-19 has of course put a stop to that, Brooke really enjoys baking and she has such a caring nature, I happily bought all the ingredients for her to be able to bake the huge amount of cakes. I am exceptionally proud of her”

Brooke hasn’t stopped there. She has decided to walk 89km, the equivalent of just over two marathons, in June to raise more funds, having already completed 60km of that so far. You can visit Brooke’s Just Giving Page here to make donations:

Staff at Barnes Lodge were over the moon at Brooke’s generosity and kindness, who donated funds to the excellent cause in exchange for a tasty cupcake.

Nicky Pett, Home Manager at Barnes Lodge commented: “The idea is just fantastic, and to come from such a young heart is even better. Having that cupcake delivery cheered us all up and we are so grateful to Brooke and her family. She truly is a special young lady.”
