Coronavirus Won’t Stop Barnes Lodge Residents from Celebrating VE Day!

If it wasn’t for Coronavirus, residents at Barnes Lodge in Tudeley Lane, Tonbridge, would be having a huge party to celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Friday 8th May was the 75th anniversary of VE Day. In a world without lockdown, this would have been a very significant occasion – even the May bank holiday was moved to recognise this. Staff at Barnes Lodge care home have worked hard to ensure their residents still had a fantastic day anyway.

They were treated to a special lunch of pie, mash and mushy peas followed by bread and butter pudding with custard. This was of course all washed down a tipple or two! Residents and staff also got busy decorating one of the big windows in the home, creating a lovely display full of memorabilia. Whilst they couldn’t all be together to have one big party, the residents didn’t miss out and had lots of fun decorating their bedrooms for this important day.

Katie Samuels, Social Activities Facilitator at Barnes Lodge said: “We absolutely love celebrating events and throwing big parties, so we were determined to make sure our residents had a brilliant day with us. Whilst they couldn’t see their families, we kept them busy and smiling – they absolutely loved decorating their rooms and so did the staff!

“This day is so important, especially as it marks the 75th year, lots of our residents have memories of both WW1 and WW2, so it was great for us to listen to them reminiscing – we all learnt a lot.”
