How Extra Care Housing Helped Jerry Following Loss of his Wife
“Before moving in to Watling Court, I lived in a flat in Northfleet, I was there for 30 years with my wife, Jean but she was unwell and couldn’t manage the stairs up to the flat, she hadn’t been out for a year. When I was attacked by some youths at the local shop, my family thought it best I should move.
“Sadly, Jean was only at Watling Court for a day before she was taken into hospital and passed away, but for the very short time she was here, she loved it. It has definitely helped me being here since Jean’s passing, I don’t think I would have coped in my old place. Here there is always someone to talk to, I think that’s my favourite bit, if you don’t want to be isolated, you don’t need to be. Of course, I feel much safer too, this is my home now.”
Jerry’s family are delighted with his new home too, with daughter Ann commenting, “We wanted dad to be somewhere he wouldn’t be on his own too much and we were so lucky to find Watling Court. He loves the social activities and knows that the staff are close at hand if he needs them. The staff and residents have really helped him through this hard time, it’s the best move he ever made.”
Helen Goulding, Housing Officer at Watling Court added: “I am so pleased we have been able to support Jerry at this difficult time. He is enjoying new hobbies, socialising with other residents and regaining his confidence and that is what independent living schemes are all about.”
