Buying my Apartment at Rosewell House: Janice’s Story

For most people, moving into a retirement home means downsizing, but 72-year-old Janice Starnes felt like she upsized when she moved into Rosewell House in Tonbridge.

“I don’t feel like I’ve downsized. I have all the furniture from my two bedrooms, in one bedroom! It’s so spacious and well thought out, which is uncommon for retirement housing.”

Janice bought her apartment at Rosewell House Extra Care Housing Scheme through Older Person’s Shared Ownership (OPSO). She began her search for a ground floor flat in February and found Rosewell House in September, by January she had moved in and she hasn’t looked back since.

“When I came to look around, I couldn’t get over the space. I absolutely loved it, I didn’t think I’d be able to afford it. Of course, I then had the worry of having to sell my house and I did fear I might lose the apartment because of that but the process of buying was smooth and the team weren’t pushy at all. It was a bonus that I could bring my dog, Treacle too.

“Now I am here, I am so relaxed, I can sit on my balcony and look out at the garden. My family are thrilled that I’m safe and comfortable, I wouldn’t even worry if I left my front door open here!

“I honestly can’t fault it, there is nothing I don’t like. The apartment is great, the restaurant is wonderful and I don’t have to cook at all. There are lots of activities if you want to join in too. My life has completely changed, it’s hard to put into words but I absolutely love it here, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”

Rosewell House comprises 59 one- and two-bedroom apartments for over 55s, with access to care and support on site. The scheme also offers on site facilities such as a restaurant, salon and club room, as well as activities. Apartments are available on an affordable rent basis, via Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and to purchase through OPSO. Find out more at
