Work will start on site in the autumn for Abbeyfield Kent’s new extra care housing scheme, which will comprise 59 one and two bedroom apartments available for market sale and on an affordable rent basis.

The Society, a Kent based charity and housing association, is presently six months away from completion on its new care home, Barnes Lodge, which is being constructed alongside its current home, Woodgate. Once completed, the current Woodgate residents will move across to their new home, Barnes Lodge, making way for the extra care housing scheme to be built in its place.

Extra care housing schemes, sometimes referred to as assisted living, are available for over 55s with various care needs. Residents live independently in their own apartments, whilst the Society’s domiciliary care provider, Caring Companions, can provide tailored care and support packages. Residents and their families have peace of mind, knowing that staff are on site 24/7.

As well as the apartments, each with en suite accessible wet rooms, the scheme will boast plenty of communal facilities, including landscaped gardens, a restaurant, a therapy room and hair salon, multiple seating and quiet areas and an activity room.

Leon Steer, Chief Executive of the Society commented: “The charity has been providing accommodation and care for older people in Kent for nearly 50 years and Tonbridge, like all communities in Kent, will be experiencing a substantial increase in the numbers of older people needing long-term permanent care in the coming years.

“This exciting project has created four years of development work and an abundance of new permanent jobs, strengthening the Tonbridge economy and relieving the suffering of many very vulnerable people.”

Buyers will be able to purchase apartments off plan; those wishing to register their interest should contact The housing scheme is due to be completed by 2018.
