The Society’s Spirit of Abbeyfield award ceremony takes place each year at Hempstead House in Sittingbourne and welcomes staff who have achieved long service or NVQs throughout the year.

As well as the certificate presentation, the event also recognises one of the Society’s 700 employees or volunteers who has gone above and beyond their job role with their commitment to older people.

This year’s winner, Jill Redman, was chosen for a number of reasons and in a video shown at the event, the Society’s Chief Executive, Leon Steer said: “Jill certainly embodies the Spirit of Abbeyfield, as the award is about reflecting the Society’s values, which are caring for people with compassion and she definitely does that. She has no boundaries for the time she is prepared to give, whether it is day or night, she is a very worthy winner.”

After receiving her award, Jill said: “When I realised that I was the person they were talking about on the video my initial reaction was mixed emotions. To get my legs to stand and walk through so many people congratulating me was something else, I felt honoured at the same time, to accept the Spirit of Abbeyfield Award for them as well.

“The honour would be not be complete without acknowledging and realising the appreciative awareness of the impact I have had on so many people, so thank you to everyone for your kind words.”

The award ceremony is now in its fifth year, previous winners include Maggie Town, Valerie Banfield, Sally Briggs and Kath Haines.
